Time for goal line technology?

Goal line technology is the way forward according to those of you who took  part in our newsletter survey with an overwhelming 79% believing the technology should be introduced, regardless of whether it can be implemented at all levels of football.

The on-going debate into goal line technology was once again brought into the limelight after Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal in England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup with Sepp Blatter promising that FIFA would review their stance on the issue.

In the subsequent aftermath Paul Hawkins from Hawk-Eye, one of the technology providers, claimed they would install the technology for free at Premier League clubs in return for sponsorship around the ground citing a similar model that is adapted in tennis with Rolex sponsoring Hawk-Eye at Wimbledon.

However whilst viable in the top flight of English football it leaves clubs from further down the echelons of the football pyramid, even Football League sides, trying to find the £250,000 installation costs if they are to stay in touch with the Premier League.

Of course in an era in which sports including cricket, tennis and rugby have all embraced technology to aid accurate decision making, many believe it is time for football to get with the times and prevent errors which could be easily resolved and can prove costly to clubs.  The debate is set to continue.

Keep an eye out for future polls in our weekly newsletter which you can register for here.
