Farnborough Town fund raiser for Heroes

Zamaretto League side  Farnborough FC  announced before Christmas, that it is backing the ‘Honour our Troops’ campaign which was set up by a serving soldier on the social networking site ‘Facebook’ and is made up of people from across the UK who have the aim of boosting serving troops' morale though a variety of events and campaigns.

Many events are taking place across the country in an attempt to raise money for a huge free concert for troops serving abroad. Money from the concert will be divided between the Army, Navy and RAF Benevolent Funds. The club is right behind the campaign and will be holding a fundraising event early next year. The club will be hosting an auction and dinner at Cherrywood Road with representatives from the Honour our Troops campaign and Army Garrison present. Keep an eye on the club’s official website – www.farnboroughfc.co.uk – for more details on the event which is provisionally planned for the week commencing the 18th January 2009.

One of the major events of the Honour Our Troops campaign is a 500 mile sponsored charity walk, which will set off on 4th January 2010 from Catterick Garrison HQ and arrive into Aldershot Garrison on 29th January 2010. The idea for the walk came from Claire Bustard from Northern Ireland. Lee Tomlinson from Milton Keynes is the Main Organiser and route planner and has been working tirelessly to get this right. Claire has got the backing of BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service Radio) City Beat (Belfast Radio), The Sun and Star newspapers, and Radio Thiephval Barracks in her home town of Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The walk between Catterick and Aldershot will take in other Garrison towns including Ripon, Harrogate, Keighley, Leeds, Teversal, Nottingham, Leicester, Rugby, Milton Keynes, Bicester, Brize Norton, Warminster, Portsmouth, Brighton and Petworth. There will also be a pause at Wootton Bassett.

The proposed stop off at Selly Oak Hospital will now take place by a visit by the people who were originally going to walk there over the Christmas period to deliver Cards and Presents to the injured service personnel. Upon the walkers' return to Aldershot on January 29th, the group will be invited to Farnborough’s Zamaretto Premier clash with Tiverton Town at Cherrywood Road on Saturday January 30th as the club’s guests, where a cheque from the fundraising night will be presented to them on the pitch prior to the game.
