English Cup - Visa success

Organisers of the English Cup, Shrewsbury's International Soccer Tournament, are celebrating after hearing today that an Albanian club has been granted visas to enter the UK after five years of applying.

Kino Studio is sending a team to compete in the under 15 professional competition at the tournament, which kicks off at Shrewsbury Sports Village on Sunday (August 2) and runs until Friday (August 7).

The Albanians will take their place in the tournament alongside fellow newcomers Cantolao Academy from Peru. Other countries represented in Shrewsbury are Mexico, Egypt, Romania, Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

Margaret Hughes, tournament administrator, said: "We are absolutely delighted that after five years of hard work, Kino Studio has finally managed to receive visas.

"It has been a long, hard battle because teams from certain countries find it virtually impossible to get visas. We have assisted Kino Studio by sending a letter of support for each of the party of 20 that will be coming to Shrewsbury."

Tournament chairman Grant Perry said it was disappointing that for the first time there would be no teams from the United States competing this year.

"We had hoped that the weakness of the pound against the dollar might help to attract more American teams this year, but it hasn't worked out that way," he explained. "Football clubs in the States appear to be hiding from the recession."

The tournament provides a great family day out, with action during the week from 10am until 8.30pm and an earlier finish time on Friday, Finals Day.  Parking is free (subject to space) and admission cost £2 adults and £1 children.
