The Dene Fields side of Matlock Town's Causeway Lane headquarters may resemble a building site following the demolition of the old main stand and Social Club, but it's now time for the final push in fund raising for what Gladiators officials believe will transform the area into the best sporting facilities within the Derbyshire Dales.
While the whole development is not expected to be completed until the start of the 2010/2011 season, work is well under way as the area is being levelled out ready for the main construction work to commence which will mean a brand new stand incorporating a two storey Social Club.
Fans have already dipped deep into their pockets as fundraisers have brought in about £50.000 towards the project, but now Stuart Briddon, a fan who has led the money raising schemes, wants the Gladiators supporters and the local community to help even more as the last fundraising lap looms forever closer.
"Over the last few years a small band of fans have worked hard to bring in around £50,000 and we are now looking to raise even more" explained Mr Briddon.
"Recent fund raising events have included sponsored walks to games at Hednesford and Buxton plus a game against Derby County Veterans where fans had the chance to bid to play in the game. We hope to run a golf day later in the year along with other events. With these extra funds we hope to be able to provide the town with the best sporting facilities in the Derbyshire Dales. The New Stand will also incorporate a new Social Club and at this point we must again acknowledge the excellent donation from the County Club given the project a real shot in the arm. There'll be new changing facilties as well and all this will benefit the local community in a number of ways. The new facilities will not only provide first class sporting facilities for local clubs and organisations but also an excellent venue for functions and conferences."
