Sandbach donate 300 kits to Africa

FA Charter Standard club Sandbach United have shown some early christmas spirit by donating 300 kits to children in Africa.

The club, which was recently granted permission to build a state-of-the-art £2m centre of excellence at Abbeyfields, has donated 300 old football kits and boots to underprivileged children in Ghana.

The FA Charter Standard Community Club is working closely with the Sabre Charitable Trust to help African children through coaching a variety of sports and building a holiday complex.

Player Stephen Cole travelled to Ghana to help out.  While there he was invited to play for the local team, Besease, which included a Ghana under-18s international.

He said: “Some of the players had no proper footwear so played in bare feet or homemade sandals and no shin pads, so the ECON sponsored Sandbach United kit we sent really made a difference.

“The pitch was on a 30 degree incline and the grass was well above the ankles with no pitch markings and at one stage the match was interrupted by chickens all over the pitch.”

Club president Colin Oakes said: “We are delighted to help less fortunate children.”
