The Irish FA’s ‘Going for Goal’ charity partners (Mencap, Positive Futures and the Princes Trust) have publicly thanked the ‘Green and White Army’ for their excellent support for pre game collections.
The charities have asked that fans keep up their support by ‘digging deep’ for the Slovakia match collection, the final collection of the World Cup qualifying series.
Agnes Lunny, Chief Executive Officer of Positive Futures says, ‘We are really grateful for the support of the IFA and the Northern Ireland fans. At the Israel match we collected £1379.97 during the pre match collection which is an excellent result. We’re aiming to beat that at the Slovakia game! We’ve also been able to give some of the people who use our services the opportunity to meet their Northern Ireland team heroes at training and to do a walk around the Windsor Park pitch at half time. This has had a fantastically positive effect on the morale of all the people involved’.
Positive Futures provides supported living services which help people with a learning disability to live independent lives – in their own homes, near family, with people of their choice. The charity also provides a ‘family support service’ which allows children and their families to participate in community activities such as drama, art and after schools projects. The charities ‘adult placement service’ allows families to take periods of respite from full time caring through allowing their loved ones to be placed for short or longer breaks with volunteer ‘placement provider’ families.
Positive Futures is in the process if planning a special project which, with the support of the IFA, will allow people with a learning disability to participate in indoor sports, improve their fitness and give them the opportunity to attend football, rugby and Gaelic games events as supporters.
Agnes says, ‘Many of the people who use our services are keen sports fans but, because of their disabilities, they sometimes do not have the same opportunities to play and support their favourite sports. We hope that this new project will go some way to redressing that’.
The Going for Goal IFA charity partnership will run until the end of 2010.
