Mark Harrod presented the Award to Andy Spetch of Bury St Edmunds Rugby Football Club who won the Volunteer Sports Groundsman of the Year Award at the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Awards in a glittering Oscar-style ceremony at the SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff.
Responsible for 15 acres of rugby pitches plus an all-weather training pitch, Andy has developed a maintenance strategy that has saved the club money through targeting spending – the club does not own any equipment, so Andy negotiates with service providers to carry out any work in the most cost- effective way.
The Award was presented by category sponsor Mark Harrod to Andy in front of an audience of almost 300 of the UK’s and Europe’s leading groundscare experts as well as dignitaries from the governing bodies of sport and influential sports administrators such as Sport England CEO Jennie Price.
Mark Harrod said: “As a company already committed to sport from grass roots to professional levels, we are proud to sponsor an IOG Industry Award, which recognises the dedication of all grounds staff to attain a high standard of workmanship, especially the support of volunteers.”
