Everton starlet signs for Accross

Accross Football Academy have signed up Ex Everton and Preston North End Physio and Blackburn Rovers legend Mick (Baz) Rathbone onto the successful Boys and Girls lecturing team.

Baz, who was Head of Sports Medicine at Everton has graciously given his time and experience to East Lancashire students at Accrington and Rossendale College.

Rathbone will split his time between lecturing and working with the college’s football teams until the end of the academic year.

The ex-Birmingham City player played for Rovers, Preston North End and Halifax Town and in his time at Everton worked with the high profile Premier League players such as Tim Cahill, Louis Saha, Phil Neville and many more working with the small squad that supremo David Mayes has to work with. A testament in itself to the success the club enjoyed during those years.

A serious knee injury cut short his playing days in 1991 and he undertook a degree in physiotherapy at Salford University to carve out a new career.

As Baz said in the local newspaper the Evening Telegraph

“When I left Everton the college asked me to do some lecturing, but I couldn’t at that time “A couple of days ago they asked me again, and as it happened between then and summer, I had three England under 17s games, but apart from that work I did have a bit of spare time, so it fitted in perfectly. Most of the England matches are in the holidays as well, so it is fantastic.

“The set-up at the college is really impressive and Mark Fell, the head of sport, is doing a fantastic job.”
