Steven Gerrard ensured the Mersyside rivalry with Everton would boil over by criticising their style of play and claiming 'They are not better than us' after the sides met on Sunday.
Gerrard spoke to the BBC today after a fiery 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, with several flashpoints, including a Liverpool winner that was wrongly chalked off for offside.
He then compared Everton to the Potters due to their physicality; 'I think we were fantastic and stood up to a team that are very similar to Stoke. Everton are effective because they have some big, physical lads...'
The captain also inferred that Liverpool were the only team that 'wanted to play football', though he may be left red faced for suggesting so as Everton overall enjoyed more possesion and completed more passes than their rivals.
There is little doubt that Gerrard's comments will add more fuel to the ongoing Mersyside fire, but given the history between these two clubd anyway, it hardly needed it.
