Manchester United win Community Shield with no debut for goal line technology

eNewsletter
Robin Van Persie picked up where he left off last season as his brace gave Manchester United the victory over Wigan in the Community Shield.

Van Persie's goals, a superb header after 6 minutes, and a deflected effort midway through the second half, were enough to see off a rather lacklustre Wigan.

The win marked marked manager David Moyes' first competitive win at Manchester United, as well as his first trophy, not only for United but in his managerial career. It was a match United were expected to win, and one they did so without ever really moving into top gear.

Moyes will have been glad to see his side, with no new signings as of yet, show that they can still get the job done, Van Persie in particular showing that he will again be a massive player this season.

With Wayne Rooney out injured, talk of his future could be put to one side as the end of the match paved the way for the start of the Premier League season in a week's time.

One footnote of the game was also the use of goal line technology, the Community Shield providing a test run for the new system, which will be implemented in the league this season, as well as the World Cup next year.

Whilst it wasn't needed in this instance, it's value will no doubt be shown at some point in the coming months.
