Everton fans confused by name gaffe

eNewsletter
It had to happen sooner or later given the number of foriegn players joining Premier League clubs and Everton’s heralded arrival of new signing Gerard Deulofeu ended up as a ginat gaffe – after club officials spelt his name wrong on the back of his shirt.

Everton fans were chuffed to bits that boss Roberto Martinez had lured Barcelona wonderkid Deulofeu to Goodison Park on a season-long loan earlier in the summer.

But despite handing him the number 10 shirt and a prize place at Everton’s kit launch, the chance to show off the arrival of Deulofeu ended up going wrong.

Instead of ‘Deulofeu’, the shirt featured the name ‘Deufoleu’ – and was soon picked up by fans arriving at Everton’s official club shop – with plenty posting a photo of the top on Twitter for others to enjoy.

Deulofeu might not be the easiest name to spell, but the embarrassing gaffe was far from the perfect advertisement for the new shirt.

At least Everton somewhat saved face by spelling the names of other new signings Antolin Alcaraz, Arouna Kone and Joel Robles correctly.

But it was red faces all round in the club shop.
