Shrewsbury Town to commemerate 20 years of Kick it Out

eNewsletter

Saturday's match between Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham at the Greenhous Meadow is dedicated to marking the 20 year anniversary of Kick It Out.

The players from both teams and also the match officials will be dressed in special t-shirts during the pre-match warm up to celebrate the action against racism in football.

The campaign is embarking on a special ‘Season of Action’ to recognise the progress which has been made in tackling all forms of discrimination in football since 1993.

Shrewsbury Town captain Tamika Mkandawire, a firm supporter of the Kick It Out campaign, said: "They're trying to kick racism out of football which can only be a good thing and the more awareness we can bring to the situations that have happened then the better it is."

"Personally, I can't remember experiencing racism in football, but I know players that have come across it. If you look over the last couple of years there have been incidents in the Premier League that have been highlighted."

"There is still a bit of racism there. It may not be at the forefront of football, as it was, but I still think there is racism, which has been shown."

Martin James, head of community development at Shrewsbury Town, added: "Activities will be taking place up and down the country throughout the season as the organisation continues to strive to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for all."

"Shrewsbury Town will be supporting activities in schools where the educational message of tolerance and acceptance of others is well established but needs constantly revisiting."

Kick It Out has also introduced a free app to report incidents of discrimination, these reports will be treated in the strictest of confidence. The app is available to iPhone and Android users from the App Store or Google Play.
