Premier League Sunday fixtures prove costly for England ahead of qualifiers

Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones and Glen Johnson have all withdrawn from the England squad ahead of their World Cup Qualifiers.

The lunch time kick off between Liverpool and Manchester United saw Wayne Rooney left out of the side after picking up a head injury.

And in a feisty affair between the rivals, it was only a matter of time before an injury was picked up. Unfortunately for Roy Hodgson however, both were England players.

Liverpool took the lead after only four minutes when Agger's header was turned in by Daniel Sturridge from a corner. The first injury came after Phil Jones fell awkwardly jumping with Coutinho, and went over on his ankle.

The second half was an equally full blooded affair and when Glen Johnson and Evra dived into a challenge, Johnson came out the worse. He also left the field and was replaced by another English full back in Andre Wisdom.

Liverpool held out to win the match and afterward goal scorer Sturrdige admitted he was playing with a thigh problem and was 'doubtful' for England's matches.

In response, England have called up Cardiff defender Steven Caulker, 21.

England play Moldova at Wembley on Friday before a tough test in Ukraine the following Tuesday.

England currently trail Montenegro by two points in Group H with a game in hand and are only one point ahead of Ukraine.
