Barcelona's Dani Alves defies racist abuse by eating banana thrown at him during a match

Barcelona full back Dani Alves responded to having a banana thrown at him by racist fans by picking it up and taking a bite out of it.

The 30 year old Brazilian was stepping up to take a corner during his side's 3-2 win over Villarreal, when the banana landed on the pitch.

This is not the first time that Alves has been targeted by racist fans during his time in Spain, and perhaps his calm reaction reflects how sadly, he has become accustomed to such treatment.

"We have suffered this in Spain for some time," said Alves after the game. "You have to take it with a dose of humour."

"We aren't going to change things easily. If you don't give it importance, they don't achieve their objective."

Barca got a vital win as they look to stay challenging for the La Liga title, but found themselves 2-0 down before a remarkable comeback, with Alves, who was involved in two of the goals, arguably man of the match.

The club were rocked hours before the game by the news that former coach Tito Vilanova had died at the age of 45.
