Wigan Athletic unveil statue of Dave Whelan

Wigan Athletic have unveiled a statue of owner and former chairman, Dave Whelan, outside the clubs DW Stadium.

The statue, which shows Whelan holding the FA Cup after they won it in 2013, was unveiled on the same day that he celebrated his 80th birthday

Whelan purchased the Latics in 1995 and under his ownership they moved through  the divisions making their way to the Premier League in 2005. The club spent 8 years in the Premier League before being relegated the same season as their FA Cup win.

In March 2015, with his grandson, David Sharpe, taking over as the chairman of Wigan.

The unveiling was attended by Roberto Martinez, who was manager of the club at the time of the FA Cup win, and captain at the time, Emmerson Boyce.
