Numerous attendance records were broken in the second round of group stage matches in the Checkatrade Trophy
Over one third of attendances were below 1000 with the highest attendance being Swindon Town vs Bristol Rovers with 2698 in attendance. However, this figure still broke the record for the lowest ever attendance for the ‘A420 Derby’.
Portsmouth saw their lowest attendance at a match since 1945 with an attendance of 1355 against Reading U23’s. Elsewhere, Port Vale saw 1025 people watch their Group E Northern Section match against Mansfield, this attendance was the second lowest in their history.
The other record low crowd also involved an under 23 as Grimsby Town hosted Leicester City u23’s in front of 609 fans which was the lowest attendance for a cup game at Grimsby.
Seven of the bottom eight attendances involved the newly introduced Under 23 teams which suggests that lower league fans are not in support of the controversial new format.
