Aston Villa protest by fans falls flat ahead of defeat to Liverpool

Three fans groups The Villa Blog, My Old Man Said and AVillafan.com suggested a demonstration after growing disillusioned with the club's demise over the past four years. The aim was for fans to wait until the game had started before taking their seats for the clash with Liverpool.

But the planned protest fell flat with most Villa fans taking their seat in the stand before kick off rather than joining the eight-minute boycott

A band of about 150 supporters spent the first eight minutes of the game in the Holte End concourses, but most of their fellow fans took their seats in the stands in time for kick off.

There was a brief burst of a 'We Want Our Villa Back' chant as the protestors made their way to their seats for the rest of the game.

In their statement ahead of the protest they said: "Things are not right at Aston Villa and it’s not just under Paul Lambert.

"There have been too many seasons of under achievement and this great club and its supporters deserve better.

"It’s clear to the footballing world that things are not as they should be at Aston Villa and unless things change soon, the decline will continue."

The Villa Park faithful got behind the team as manager Paul Lambert had asked, particularly during the second half, although there was a 'We want Lambert Out' chant in the closing stages, and mild boos at the final whistle.

Despite the failed protest the result can't have improved the mood amongst the Villa faithful, with crowds down and the real possibility of being drawn into the relegation dogfight. Villa have scored just 11 league goals the lowest of any side in England and Scotland.
