Barnsley expelled from the FA Cup after fielding ineligible player in First Round Replay

League One side Barnsley have been expelled from the FA Cup after fielding an ineligible player in their 3-0 first round replay win against Horsham.

The non-league side will now progress to the Second Round where they will take on League Two side Sutton United.

In a statement on the club's website they acknowledged an 'administrative error' that led to them fielding the player and fully accepted the FA's decision

"We would like to apologise to our fans, players and staff for this regrettable error. This mistake - although unintentional - falls way below the high standards we set at this club and is simply not what you deserve. We have already conducted a full internal investigation and have subsequently put safeguards in place to ensure this will never happen again." the statement read.

Although the club did not name the player, it is believed to relate to striker Aiden Marsh's involvement in the replay, who was on loan at York City when the original tie took place.

FA rules only allow teams to field players who were available for the original tie in any replay, and with Marsh starting the game last week, appears to be what the charge relates to.
