Cardiff City give Neil Warnock a winning start against Bristol City

Neil Warnock is one of the most experienced managers in football and the 67-year-old showed his younger rival Lee Johnson how it should be done.

Warnock marked his first game as Cardiff City manager with a creditable win over Bristol City who were on the back of three straight wins.

Peter Whittingham's nonchalant first-half penalty put Cardiff ahead after Craig Noone was tripped by Joe Bryan.

Debutant Sol Bamba bundled in from close range to double the Bluebirds' lead, only for Lee Tomlin's powerful strike to give Bristol City hope.

Tempers flared late on but Cardiff held on to climb out of the relegation zone and up to 19th in the Championship.

Bristol City's defeat sees them stay fifth in the table.

Warnock had already made his mark on the squad before a ball was kicked, having signed Bamba, Junior Hoilett, Marouane Chamakh and Kieran Richardson on free transfers within a week of his appointment.

Warnock did wonders for another struggling side Rotherham last season, taking them from bottom place to niine points from safety. It took Warnock four games with the Millers to gain a fisrt win so he will be delighted to have made an even better start with his latest club.
