Championship: Reading set to appoint former West Brom manager Steve Clarke following Nigel Adkins sacking

Reading are set to move quickly after sacking Nigel Adkins yesterday by appointing former West Brom manager Steve Clarke.

Adkins, who took charge of the club in March 2013, was sacked following a 6-1 mauling by Birmingham at the weekend, which summed up a poor start to the season in general, having lost 9 of their last 15 competitive fixtures.

Clarke, 51, took over at The Hawthorns in June 2012, replacing Roy Hodgson at the club after he left to manage England, and was his first appointment in a managerial capacity, having been assistant at West Ham, Liverpool and most notably Chelsea, where he worked under Jose Mourinho.

Clarke will be one of several managers currently in English football who can credit Mourinho with helping them make the step up from coach to manager, including Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers, who worked at Chelsea's academy before moving up.

Reading take on promotion contenders Watford this Saturday, and it is expected Clarke will be in the dugout for that game.
