It may come as a surprise to some given the Yorkshire club had won their last two league games, following on from five successive defeats at the start of the season.

"Following a meeting between the Chairman and Manager this morning it was decided Rotherham United Football Club would part company with First Team Manager Steve Evans and his Assistant Paul Raynor," a statement on the club's website said.

"During the said meeting it became clear that both parties at the present time wished to head in a different direction. The meeting was at all times positive, constructive and straigh­tforward."

"It was clear that the Chairman and the management team only wanted what they felt was best for Rotherham United Football Club."

"The Club would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Paul for their huge contribution over the last three and a half years, it has been simply an incredible journey."

Evans took charge of the club in April 2012 with the club in League Two and managed to guide them to successive promotions in his first two seasons.

Despite struggling in the Championship last season, and a three point deduction as well, Evans managed to ensure the club's survival.

The club have put Eric Black in temporary charge until a full time successor to Evans is found.
