Chelsea confirm Nike sponsorship deal

Chelsea have announced a major technical partnership with Nike. The deal comes six months after they announced they had terminated their agreement with Adidas.

Chelsea claim that this deal is the largest in the history of the club, with the deal seeing Nike become the official kit supplier of the London club. Under the deal,Nike will be responsible for producing matchday, training and exercise kit for the first team, academy and ladies teams. In addition, they will also be responsible for a range of Chelsea fan merchandise.

The deal will begin at the start next season, and although the financial details haven't been released, the Daily Telegraph reported in May that the deal would be worth £60 million per year, for ten years.

Marina Granovskaia, a Chelsea director said “like Chelsea, Nike is known around the world for its excellence and innovation and we look forward to working together in what is sure to be a successful partnership. We believe Nike will be able to support our growth into new markets, as well as helping us maintain our place among the world’s elite clubs.”

Although the reasons for the split with Adidas are unclear, with many reports suggesting that the difference between Chelsea’s agreement and the world record deal Addidas struck with Manchester United, which is worth £750 million, did played a major part.

“Chelsea is a world class club with a rich tradition and passionate fans,” said Nike brand president Trevor Edwards.

“The partnership with Chelsea reinforces our leadership position in football, and we are excited to help grow the club’s global reach, serving players and supporters with Nike innovation and design.”
