Chesterfield facing expulsion from FA Cup Third Round for fielding ineligible player
Chesterfield face expulsion from the FA Cup after being charged with fielding an ineligible player by football's governing body.
On-loan Wolves defender Georg Margreitter played a part in the club's win against MK Dons in the Second Round at the weekend, their 1-0 win rewarded with potential trip to Scunthorpe or Worcester City in the Third Round.
But a Football Association statement said: "The FA has charged Chesterfield with a breach of FA Cup rules, after allegedly fielding an ineligible player."
Chesterfield executive Chris Turner said: ''We had a verbal agreement to play Georg but unfortunately we did not ensure that the consent was received in writing."
"We will of course provide the FA with our full co-operation as they investigate the matter."
The FA have not divulged who would take their place in the Third Round, though it would most likely be MK Dons as they were the side beaten when the ineligible player was used.
