England changes backfire on Roy Hodgson

 

That result enabled Wales to top Group B ahead of England after thrashing Russia 3-0.

With the knock-outs looming England manager Roy Hodgson rested six players and the changed squad struggled to overcome a dour defensive display from the Slovaks who knew a draw would also see them qualify as a best third placed side.

Yet the general consensus has been that the likes of Harry Kane, Deli Ali, Raheem Sterling and the like are showing signs of a long season and by switching things around Hodgson may reap the rewards later on.

The downside is that England might yet end up meeting Portugal in Nice next Monday and have additional travel whilst Wales will play in Paris on Saturday.

The bottom line is, England have made the last 16 and after the 2014 World Cup disaster that is some improvement. You need to beat top teams to win the tournament and as the likes of Iceland and Albania have shown there are no easier games.
