Ex Derby and England boss Steve McClaren looks set for Newcastle job
Steve McClaren is set to be confirmed as Newcastle United’s new head coach as early as Wednesday next week – and the Magpies have made signing QPR’s Charlie Austin one of their top priorities this summer.
McClaren and United are understood to have reached an agreement which will see the former Middlesbrough, England and Derby manager take the head coach role and he is excited by the prospect of matching Newcastle’s expectations for the years ahead.
McClaren jets back from his holiday next week and no contract has been signed yet. But with McClaren keen on the job and fully aware of the role that he will have in the new set-up, there will need to be a major setback for him not to be Newcastle’s new boss.
As reported in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle earlier this week, United intend to make major improvements to their squad in the summer and QPR’s coveted Charlie Austin is one of the major targets. Austen looks set to make his England debut against Ireland on Sunday and is one of the hottest properties around.
Newcastle will face opposition from West Brom and Southampton for the 18 goal man given he scored so many in a relegated side.
