FA Cup proper kicks-off with historic game in Guernsey
Hereford United – who made the FA Cup fourth-round in 1972 by slaying giants Newcastle United – folded in 2014 and the club which has filled the void secured a memorable first FA Cup win and a tie with Romulus FC next up.
With 2,624 fans in attendance at Edgar Street, the Bulls fell behind against Midland League Premier Division opposition Alvechurch after first-half goals from Jack Cresswell and Josh Sarmento which put Hereford’s cup ambitions in serious peril.
John Mills struck for the hosts after the break before Jamie Cuss levelled the scores at 2-2.
Mike Symons then sent Edgar Street into FA Cup heaven with a third moments later before Mills’ penalty iced the cake as Hereford scored their fourth from the penalty-spot.
Guernsey FC produced an equally stirring fightback in the first ever FA Cup game on the Channel Islands.
They fell 2-0 behind within half an hour, but Dave Rihoy gave the Green Lions – without prolific striker Ross Allen – hope on 60 minutes before he grabbed a second to set up a replay on Tuesday.
Former Manchester United man Jonathan Greening may have a Champions League winners’ medal in his locker, but he will be dusting off his boots for an away FA Cup tie with Pontefract Collieries FC.
Greening’s younger brother Josh helped Tadcaster Albion turn over a 2-0 deficit to progress in the FA Cup and Jonathan will return from holiday to face Pontefract.
Tom Corner’s goal put the finishing touches on a wonderful second-half performance from Tadcaster after scores from Josh Greening and Rob Youhill blew away Scarborough Athletic.
A Lee Robinson double looked to have secured Newhaven FC’s progress into the next round, but Eastbourne United’s Liam Baitup fired home in the fourth minute of injury-time to force a replay at The Trafalgar Ground.
Droylsden FC and Radcliffe Borough FC played out arguably the tie of the round, a back-and-forth fixture finishing up 4-4, Elliot Rokka scoring in the 87th minute to force a replay.
