Its rumoured Wigan Athletic on verge of £15m takeover
Betting company K8 are reported to be in the process of taking over Wigan Athletic. The Far East betting firm are behind a £15m takeover of Dave Whelan's League One team.
As reported by The Sun, K8 Chief executive Vincent Huang has been to Wigan to finalise the move. K8 are based in the Philippines and already have connections to football with sponsorship deals in place with Manchester City, West Brom and Cardiff City.
However K8, who have online gambling and casinos worldwide in their portfolio, want to go one step further and actually own a club. The Football League will have to sanction the deal but finding the cash should not be a problem for K8, in 2016 K8 spent £5m to sponsor West Brom's kit.
Buying Wigan should give K8 more exposure, with the possibility of shirt sponsorship and renaming the ground. However, the possible takeover may cast doubt over the futures of chairman David Sharpe and boss Paul Cook.
