Joey Barton under investigation after betting allegations

Allegations made against Joey Barton, Rangers midfielder, are being investigated after media reports suggest the 34 tear old placed money on the outcome of a Celtic match, BBC Scotland has learned.

Scottish Football Association rules and regulations prohibit players, coaches, club officials and referees in Scotland from gambling on football anywhere in the world.

The SFA states it cannot comment on the matter.

On Monday, Barton was suspended by Rangers for three weeks due to a training-ground disagreement, placing his future in doubt.

Former Rangers players Steve Simonsen and Ian Black have both been banned by the SFA in recent years for placing money on the outcome of matches, alongside Partick Thistle midfielder Steven Lawless who fell foul of the rules in 2015.
