Liverpool's Martin Skrtel could join Gerrard in three match ban as FA 'look into' stamp on Manchester United's David De Gea
The incident occurred in stoppage time, with Liverpool trailing 2-1 at Anfield after two goals from Juan Mata.
The FA has confirmed they are reviewing footage of the incident, and are waiting to determine whether referee Martin Atkinson saw the incident so they know whether they can take retrospective action.
In a fiery derby, United led 1-0 at half time thanks to Mata, with skipper Steven Gerrard being brought on during the break by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
However, Gerrard, appearing in his last game against United before his move to LA Galaxy in the summer, let the emotion of the occasion get the better of him.
Clearly fired up, he stormed into one challenge, before being fouled by Ander Herrera and then stamping on the United player, which left Atkinson with no option other than to send him off less than a minute after coming on.
With Gerrard now facing a three game ban, the prospect of Skrtel joining him could have serious implications for the club's Champions League hopes, with their 2-1 defeat to United leaving them five points behind the Red Devils.
