Lancashire Police have arrested a man in connection with a complaint made by Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt following their match with Preston on Sunday.

The 33-year-old was surrounded by Preston fans after their 4-0 aggregate win over Chesterfield in the League One play-off semi finals.

Soon after the game it emerged that Evatt was targeted by a small number of fans who assaulted and verbally abused the player as he tried to leave the pitch.

Evatt was booed by a section of Preston fans throughout the game due to his previous affiliation with Preston's fiercest rivals Blackpool, which is evidently why he was targeted after the match.

A man, 20, from Preston, is being held on suspicion of assault, said police.

Lancashire Police said it was continuing to investigate the alleged assault which followed "an otherwise largely peaceful incursion on to the pitch" at the end of match on Sunday.

Preston won the tie 3-0 to get to Wembley for the first time in over 20 years thanks to a brace from Jermaine Beckford either side of a Joe Garner penalty.
