Manchester United linked to former Chelsea boss

Rumours were rife in Sunday's sports press that Jose Mourhino is positioning himself to succeed Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Mourhino has told his agent he wants to return to football as soon as possible and he will remain un England. That fact alone will fuel speculation that the former Chelsea boss can see a possible swift return - at the helm of Manchester United.

United were humbled by Norwich City in a 2-1 defeat and that marked a sixth straight league game without a win. Even sacked David Moyes avoided such a run and van Gaal admitted his job is on the line after the game.

Van Gaal is now the even money favouruite to be the next Premier League boss to leave his club and with the Old Trafford faithful booing the team and van Gaal roundly after the game things don't look good.

United are already out of the Champions League and the Norwich defeat left them fourth in the Premier League - nine points behind runaway leaders Leicester City.

The only obstacle for Mourhino - an odds-on favourite to be the next United boss - is the availability of Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. Guardiola has been linked with Manchester City but that was before United's form hit the buffers. Still, he is 2-7 to be the next City manager and as big as 11/2 to be the next United boss.

What seems likely is that both Manchester Clubs will have new managers by the start of the next season if not before.
