Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and Newcastle striker Papisse Cisse were seen to spit at each other. Evans spat on the floor in the direction of Cisse, who was on the ground, who then got up and appeared to spit at Evans.

Referee Anthony Taylor spoke to the players about the incident but neither were booked, meaning that should the FA deem it necessary, they can still punish the players post-match.

The FA as it stands are awaiting Taylor's report and will review television footage of the incident before deciding to act.

Incidentally, the governing body introduced new guidelines on spitting at other players on the pitch this season, and doubled the ban which can be handed out from three games to six games.

With only ten games left of the Premier League season, a six game ban would be a big blow for both players and their teams, with Cisse's goals for Newcastle particularly influential for his team.

The incident was a flash point in the first half of the match, which Manchester United won in the final minutes with a goal from Ashley Young.
