Newcastle owner and Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley's Sports Direct premises searched by Police

Police have searched Sports Direct premises in relation to ongoing criminal investigations into the ownership of Scottish side Rangers.

The company is owned by  Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who has a stake of almost 9% in the Ibrox club and has control of their retail operations.

Sports Direct says the visit relates to "various persons previously employed by and or associated with Rangers".

A statement added: "The investigation is not directed at Sports Direct or at any of its directors or employees."

"The police were seeking documentation which might assist the investigation."

"Sports Direct has co-operated fully and will continue to co-operate in the provision of information that the police request."

Police Scotland also confirmed the visit but would not comment further.

Rangers have seen an ongoing saga over control of the club since Craig Whyte bought the club in 2011, who was last year arrested as part of an investigation into his acquisition of the club.

The club's ownership troubles have seen it relegated to the Third Division of Scottish Football, with the club winning promotion to the Championship last season.
