Newcastle set to welcome back Jonas Gutierrez for first time after cancer battle

Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez is set to be in Newcastle's squad this weekend for the first time since being diagnosed with testicular cancer last year.

The Argentine has not played in the Premier League since last April whilst on loan to now relegated Norwich, but has made over 200 appearances for Newcastle since joining the side in 2008.

A fan favourite at St James Park, the midfielder has received overwhelming support from fans and the club since he was diagnosed in September.

Having returned to his native Argentina, he had an operation to remove his left testicle, after which he also underwent chemotherapy.

He returned to training with the club in November and has featured for the reserves, but Newcastle manager John Carver has confirmed he will be involved in the squad that take on Aston Villa this weekend.

"Jonas Gutierrez is in the squad," he said. "There's a possibility he could be on the bench and that's a massive lift for everyone."
