Non League; Class of 92 deny paying former Man United team mate £800 a week

Danny Webber played in front of just over 250 fans as Salford City Reds drew 0-0 with Cheshire side Congleton Town in Saturday's FA Cup Preliminary Round.

One of over 300 ties over the weekend, it's a long way to Wembley for the former Manchester United starlet.

But these are not ordinary times at Evostik Northern side Salford City - now owned by the 'Class of 92' - Webber's former United team mates - including Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Phil and Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs.

Salford are unbeaten in League and Cup and sit top of the table with 100% record after just four games.

It might not come as a surprise to some that reports in some Sunday papers suggest Webber is on £800 a week - an absolute fortune at this level of football.

However, the 'Class of 92' are fed up with rumours since they took over about the inflated spending, insisting it is far from the truth and having a destabilising effect on both fans and a largely volunteer workforce.

The owners claim Webber, who wants to play part-time as he has set up his own business, is being paid around half the amount alleged and that Salford is being run to a strict budget that is less than rivals Darlington 1883 and Warrington Town are operating on this season.

Webber only played a handful of games for United and made his name at Watford and Sheffield United. He spent last season with Accrington Stanley.

Few in the game will be surprised though if Salford don't win promotion with the backing they have - whatever the wages Webber is getting.
