Taylor was speaking after a dramatic week in the ongoing saga of Evans' attempts to get back into football after being convicted and imprisoned for rape.

He served two and a half years of a five year sentence before his release in October, and his search for a professional club since then has sparked wide spread controversy.

It looked like this week he would almost certainly be signing for Oldham Athletic, but pressure from supporters as well as death threats aimed at staff and board members led them to withdraw their contract offer.

Taylor and the PFA have backed Evans since his release, and speaking on the 5 Live radio, Taylor remarked that Evans "would not be the first person or persons to have been found guilty and maintained their innocence and then been proved right".

"If we are talking about things in football, we know what happened, what was alleged to have happened at Hillsborough."

"It's now unravelling and we are finding it was very different to how it was portrayed at the time, indeed by the police at the time."

Many families of the 96 victims of the disaster have voiced their anger at the comments, which are seen as insensitive towards the victims and their families.

Taylor has since stated that "The last thing I intended to do was to upset anybody connected to the Hillsborough case," and apologised fully for his remarks.
