Premier League and Football League asked to clamp down on sexist abuse at games

Clubs in the Premier League and Football League have been asked to be more active in cutting out sexist behaviour and abuse in football.

Women in Football (WIF), which represents more than 1,200 women working in the sport, has contacted all 92 Premier and Football League clubs about the issue.

Recently footage has emerged of Chelsea's female medic Dr Eva Carneiro and assistant referee Helen Byrne suffering sexist taunts during matches.

WIF has written to all 92 clubs in the Premier League and Football League asking them to be more active in dealing with sexist behaviour, and to treat any chants or abuse as they would racist abuse.

The FA has also asked for more action against sexism in the game after the footage emerged, with FA board member Heather Rabbatts describeing the abuse as "horrible".

She said it should not be tolerated, adding: "We are absolutely encouraging people to report incidents like this."

Kick it Out, who deal with all types of discrimination in football, said they have received 25 reports of sexist abuse this season, compared to only two last season.

However, very rarely do the culprits face any recrimination due to a lack of evidence or communication between the victims and clubs.
