Premier League: Liverpool given go ahead for Anfield extension plans



Premier League runners up Liverpool  have been given permission to increase Anfield stadium's capacity from about 45,500 to about 59,000 as part of a £100m expansion plan.

Liverpool City Council's planning committee approved the club's plan to expand the Main Stand by 8,300 seats and the Anfield Road Stand by 4,800.

The proposals also included conference and banqueting facilities, a new club shop and additional car parking, as well as a Memorial Garden for the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

The current memorial to the disaster will be moved temporarily during construction before being integrated into the new garden.

Construction will begin next year for completion by the 2016-17 season, with he Main Stand willbe expanded from a single tier to three tiers.

Anfield will be in full swing this evening as Liverpool take on Championship side Middlesbrough in the Fourth Round of the Capital One League Cup.
