Sunderland have confirmed that Adam Johnson will continue to play for the club following his charges for sexual activity with an underage girl.
The 27-year-old was initially arrested on March 2nd and formally charged yesterday after answering his bail.
He was initially suspended by the club, although that was lifted on 18th March. He was yesterday charged with three counts of sexual activity with an underage girl, as well as one count of grooming.
"The club recognises that the formal legal process must take its course and whilst our position remains unchanged, we will keep the matter under review," read a Sunderland statement.
"The club will not be making any further comment."
Midfielder Johnson will appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on 20 May. He began his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City, after which he moved to the Black Cats in 2012.
