Premier League: Tottenham player Benoit Assou-Ekotto given three match ban for supporting 'quenelle gesture'

Tottenham defender Benoit Assou Ekotto has been the latest player to be charged by the FA in relation to the 'quenelle gesture'.

The gesture was made last season by former West Brom and France striker Nicolas Anelka. He said the gesture was a show of support fo his friend, French comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who is known for his outspoken views.

Those who support the comedian argue that the gesture is purely anti-establishment, but there are those who claim it has anti-Semitic connotations. 

Assou-Ekotto, 30, has received a three game ban also been ordered to pay a £50,000 fine by the Football Association for making a comment on social media, after he applauded Anelka for using the gesture.

Anelka was punished with a five game ban and a larger fine when he made the gesture. after scoring for West Brom at West Ham in December.

Yannick Sagbo, who plays for Hull City also fined after making comments supporting the gesture on Twitter in April.
