Scottish football: Gary Locke set to be confirmed boss at Kilmarnock

Gary Locke, the former Hearts manager has been in interim charge at Kilmarnock  since Alan Johnston’s departure in February and has impressed, having suffered just one defeat in seven games.

He looks set to be named permanent boss later today and according to The Scottish Daily Express the 39-year-old Locke insists he will be thrilled to land the job. He said: “It’s something I’ve worked hard towards. It’s a fantastic opportunity.

“I’m hopeful something will be done before the weekend. Things have moved on and I hope to have more to say on Friday.”

Locke is impressed by new chairman Jim Mann’s  plans for the club.

He said: “The new board of directors have been fantastic. I’ve been really impressed with the way they have handled everything.

“The club is trying to be as positive as possible.

“There are a lot of plans in place to make the club even better than it is right now and I’d like to be part of that.”

The 39-year-old also praised the players for putting him in position to land the job.

He said: “I’ve said all along, it’s not about me, it’s about the players.

“If they perform, you get a better reputation as a manager and that’s been the case here.

“That’s how football works. If they play well, your stock rises.  If they don’t play well, it’s the manager who gets the stick.

“But I can’t praise the players highly enough.”
