Scottish league One side Hamilton handed further transfer embargo

Hamilton Academical will be under a transfer embargo until the end of the 2025/26 season after a ruling by an independent tribunal.

The SPFL confirmed in a statement on their official website that the Accies had 'admitted to further breaches of SPFL Rules by failing to settle its tax obligations to HMRC on three occasions, and for failing to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC on each occasion, as required by SPFL Rules.'

The club was already under an embargo relating to similar charges brought against them relating to the 2024/25 season.

As well as the embargo the club was fined £7,500 of which £5,000 was suspended.

The club has dropped down to League One amid ongoing financial issues which saw them deducted 15 points last season in the Championship and ultimately relegated.

They are also playing their home fixtures away from New Douglas Park this season as the club is in dispute about the ground's ownership and rental agreement.

In response to the latest charges the clubs released a statement which read:

"The written decision is awaited and the question of appeal will be carefully considered at that time.

"The offences admitted related to serious weaknesses in our finance and administration departments – and to the dreadful circumstances which afflicted the operation of the club for the past two seasons.

"The finance and administration departments have now been completely revamped and the circumstances and environment which used to prevail have been consigned to the past.

"In addition to appointing a new chief finance officer and head of administration the club is well along the process of negotiating new investment and strengthening the board.

"Please be assured that a complete overhaul of the club is underway after one of the most difficult periods in our history. What is needed most of all is the continued backing of our supporters for John Rankin and the team on the pitch."
