Southport lose place in National League Premier after defeat to Dover

In-form Dover Athletic dumped Southport FC out of the Vanarama National League with a three-goal salvo on Good Friday

Relegation was officially confirmed on the final whistle as Southport’s loyal supporters embarked on long trip back to Merseyside.

A statement on the club’s website said: “This afternoon’s results have confirmed Southport FC’s relegation to the Vanarama National League North.

“This is hugely disappointing to the board, team management and of course, our supporters.

“We would like to thank the club’s supporters for their backing during a very difficult season.

“The club will work tirelessly to ensure a strategic framework is in place to allow the first-team to have a much more successful 2017-18 campaign

"We will endeavour to update supporters on our plans as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile the result gives Dover a realistic chance of making the play-offs.
