SPFL Club Hamilton get cannabis oil sponsor

Hamilton Academical's ground will change its name from New Douglas Park to the Hope CBD Stadium.

It is reported the deal will net the club a five-figure sum each season while they are also believed to be in line for a slice of the profits from the sale of the cannabis-derived products.

Hamilton have been struggling for cash since they lost around £1million last year in a bank scam while their former stadium sponsor, SuperSeal, went bust.

Responding to criticism that the move promotes cannabis, Hope CBD chief executive Colin McGowan told STV : "Will there be people out there saying: 'Hamilton Accies are supporting a drug, it's unbelievable...'?

"Yes, you are going to get that. If you get criticism in football, just do anything."

Hope CBD sells marijuana-based items as "food supplements" and have had a small store located in the stadium since last year.

Their products use CBD, the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, and include tea, ointments and sweets.

Hamilton spokesperson told STV: "I think sometimes when people hear the word 'cannabis', they think of law-breaking or addiction.

"If there was anything of an addictive nature in it, we'd be a hundred miles away from it.

"We are pretty well-known for the work we do in the field of addiction."
