It's been the worst kept secret in football but as yet Manchester United, who were expected to confirm Louis Van Gaal's departure on Monday, have yet to make an official statement.

Despite there being no official announcement that van Gaal has been sacked it has been widely reported that former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho set to be named as his replacement.

Van Gaal, 64, will leave after two years of a three-year contract and is discussing severance terms. The former Netherlands boss is believed to earn around £6.4m a year.

Mourinho's appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets senior United officials on Tuesday.

It us understood that United have made an offer to Ryan Giggs, Van Gaal's assistant, for him to stay at Old Trafford, but it is not known what role he would have and whether he would accept.

Despite winning the FA Cup on Saturday the BBC reported shortly afterwards that van Gaal was to be sacked because of his failure to attain Champions League football and the style of play which led to a desperate tally of goals by United's standards.
