Sunday market prompts strange kick-off time for Walsall v Gillingham game

Football fans might have thought it was a misprint when they saw the League 1 game between Walsall and Gillingham was scheduled for a 6.00pm kick-off on a Sunday night.

But, Sunday's unusual six o'clock kick-off time is to avoid a clash with the lucrative weekly Sunday Market at Bescot, a longstanding money-spinner for Walsall.

The game had to be put back from Saturday to allow Gillingham extra time to recover from Thursday night's JPT tie at Ashton Gate.

The club are still expecting a bumper crowd as fans gear up for the club's first ever Wembley visit. Unlike Gillingham, who lost their JPT semi-final, Walsall beat Preston on Tuesday and now meet Bristol City in the March final.
