Tottenham lose Champions League opener in front of record crowd
Tottenham opened their first Champions League campaign, in six years, with a 2-1 loss against current Ligue 1 leaders Monaco.
Tottenham, who are playing at Champions League games at Wembley whislt their new stadium is being build, played in front of a record crowd of 85,011. The attendance broke the record for the highest attendance for a Tottenham game, highest attendance for a home English team and highest attendance for a home English team in the Champions League.
Goals from Berando Silva and substitute Thomas Lemar put Monaco 2-0 inside 31 minutes. A headed goal from Toby Alderweirld just before half time got Spurs within 1 goal but wasn't enough to trigger a second half comeback for the London side.
Elsewhere in group A Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow played out a 1-1 draw in Germany.
Next up for Tottenham is a tough away trip to CSKA Moscow whilst Monaco have a home game against Bayer Leverkusen.
