World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams
FIFA has announced that the 2026 World Cup is to be expanded from 32 teams to 48 teams.
The expansion will see the group stage changed to 16 groups with 3 teams in each. The top 2 from each group will then qualify for the last 32 knockout round.
The decision comes after FIFA voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.
Speaking at a sports conference in Dubai in December, Infantino said expansion will also benefit "the development of football all over the world".
He added: "There is nothing bigger in terms of boosting football in a country than participating in a World Cup."
