Plymouth Argyle Unveils Plans to Expand Training Facilities
League One side, Plymouth Argyle have revealed ambitious plans to expand and upgrade their first-team training facilities by developing land next to its Harpers Football Centre near Home Park.
The club is working to acquire the adjacent site, formerly known as Peverell Park — a historic cricket ground that has stood unused for over 15 years. Once an integral part of the city’s sporting landscape, the site is now earmarked for regeneration as part of Argyle’s long-term infrastructure strategy.
Under the proposed plans, Argyle aims to extend Harpers Football Centre, create a brand-new grass pitch, and improve existing training grounds. The goal is to consolidate all first-team operations into a single, purpose-built area, enhancing both functionality and sustainability.
The club has submitted a request for pre-application advice to Plymouth City Council and is preparing a masterplan that would further integrate the site with its Home Park base.
In planning documents, Argyle stated its ongoing commitment to developing more sustainable facilities, with a focus on reducing its carbon footprint and creating a better working environment for players and staff.
“Bringing all first-team activities into one location will significantly improve how the club functions day-to-day,” the documents state. “It will also enhance the community use of the facilities and deliver improvements to the wider Central Park area.”
Peverell Park, which was originally opened for cricket in 1925, has long been left derelict since the local cricket club relocated to Mount Wise. The site is partially bordered by five-a-side football courts and Argyle’s existing training ground.
Harpers Football Centre, named after legendary former goalkeeper and club servant Bill Harper, was purchased by Plymouth Argyle in 2023. It was previously operated as Goals Plymouth before coming under the club’s ownership.
Argyle’s expansion project is part of its broader vision to future-proof the club’s infrastructure and deepen its connection with the local community, while also respecting the site’s rich sporting heritage.
