Arsenal Make First Ever £1m signing in Womens Football
Arsenal have completed the most expensive transfer in women's football history by signing Canada international Olivia Smith from Liverpool for a reported fee of £1 million.
The 20-year-old forward has signed a four-year contract with the Champions League-winning side, just one year after joining Liverpool from Sporting CP for a then club-record fee. Her move surpasses the previous women’s transfer record set by Chelsea in January, when they signed U.S. defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for £900,000.
“It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,” said Smith. “It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.”
Smith made her senior international debut for Canada at just 15 and is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in world football. She scored seven goals in 20 Women’s Super League appearances last season, establishing herself as a key player despite Liverpool’s inconsistent form.
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers praised the club’s latest acquisition, describing her as an “exciting young player” with the potential to make a “big contribution” to their title ambitions.
Liverpool, who currently sit in a period of transition, remain without a permanent manager following the dismissal of Matt Beard in February. Former Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor is reportedly the leading candidate to take over.
